Local communities and their role in SAR.

Local communities are often the first — and sometimes the only — responders when incidents occur at sea.

FHAS is working in the Comoros with local actors, including fishermen who regularly respond to emergencies near shore. What we are seeing on the ground reflects a broader reality observed in many regions.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Strengthening their capacities and better integrating these local dynamics into SAR frameworks is a key part of FHAS’ ongoing work.
