In everyday language we often refer to the captain of a ship. In maritime law, however, the official term is "master".
International conventions assign masters significant legal responsibilities, including a long-standing obligation to assist persons in distress at sea — a duty that applies regardless of commercial considerations. At the same time, masters must balance this obligation with the safety of their own ship and crew, while coordinating with authorities when rescue takes place.
