What are invisible shipwrecks?

Some maritime tragedies never appear in any report.
According to the IOM Missing Migrants Project, 79 043 people have died or disappeard on migration routes since 2024 - and this number represents only the cases we know about.
Many disappearances leave no distress alert, no witness, and no record. When a boat without communication equipment vanishes at sea, the event may never be documented. These invisible shipwrecks are a major blind spot in understanding risk at sea and planning effective SAR responses.
