The sinking of the Titanic remains one of the most defining disasters in maritime history — not only because of the scale of the tragedy, but because of the profound legal and operational changes that followed.
Many of today’s maritime safety rules were introduced only after major disasters exposed critical weaknesses in existing systems.
From passenger safety and distress communications to environmental protection and search and rescue obligations, maritime law has often evolved in response to tragedy and operational failures at sea.
